FISHING REPORT

February 08, 2012

Halibut opens March 01 2012

Fishing was anything but spotty in Sidney, if you know where to go!

Spring Salmon are abundant in Sidney area waters.

These past few days have seen Chinooks up to 15lbs from the Ferry Terminal, and back side of Coal Is.

Wain Rock area produced springs up to 16lbs.

Sidney Spit area has produced several Springs up to 15lbs. In 60 to 90 feet of water.

Try Saanichton Spit area at this time of year.

Coho Killers and Squirts are the favoured lures.

The most popular patterns have been,  Mint tulip, Glow Below, in Squirts, and Silver or Cop Car Coho Killers.

Troll mid channel, and deep drop-offs, right on the bottom.

If you are fishing Coal Island, try in the back side of the Island,

sometimes you can do very well there.

Crabbing has also picked up.

The guys that are getting out to Prawn fish are doing very well in Saanich Inlet.

If you are going out, set your traps for an hour or so, then check them. If you don't have 30 to 60 or more,

  move to another location.

DFO has posted on there website that Prawn Fishing will be closed in Saanich Inlet on the following days,

  • Dec. 1 - Dec. 15, 2011;
  • Jan. 1 -  Jan. 15, 2012;
  • Feb. 1 - Feb. 15, 2012;
  • March 1 -  March 15, 2012.
  • Open to prawn fishing from the 16th to the end of each month. You have 2 weeks each month to get out and load up!
